Early in my awakening journey, I was introduced to the story of how the Pachamama Alliance was formed after a meeting between indigenous elders in Ecuador and group of people from San Francisco. At the time, I did not realize that this was the beginning of the latest chapter of an ancient prophecy. The Achuar are an indigenous tribe deep in the Ecuadorian Amazon that had had no prior contract with the world other than interactions along their borders between their sentries and neighboring tribes. From these interactions, the Achuar learned that oil companies were poisoning the rainforest, and steadily moving closer to their home.
In the “Change the Dream” chapter of the Soul of Money, Lynne Twist recounts how a persistent vision from a rainforest ceremony led her to return to Ecuador with her husband and friends to join with John Perkins (author of the New Confessions of an Economic Hit Man) and visit the elders of the Achuar tribe. The Achuar told her delegation that they had called for them in their dreams. They then implored the group to change the dream of the North and to help protect the rainforest – the lungs of the Earth – from destruction.
The Achuar were influenced by an ancient prophecy shared by many Andean and Amazonian indigenous cultures called the Reunion of the Eagle and the Condor. This prophecy says this is the moment in history when the Eagle – representing intellect and the mind – and the Condor – representing wisdom and the heart – must come together to ensure humanity’s survival. The prophecy calls for technologically and spiritually advanced peoples to come together in ways that honor all and create the possibility of bringing the Earth back to balance.
When I first heard the prophecy, it immediately made sense to me. At the time, I was knee deep in raising awareness of our oil dependence and having a hard time seeing palatable visions of the future. The prophecy gave me a road map for how a positive future might play out. I studied various tellings of the prophecy and developed my understanding of the prophecy as an important meta narrative that speaks to the possibility of humanity awakening to its inherent genius and shifting to a consciousness that protects life on Earth.
Here is my understanding. In the beginning, all tribes revered Mother Earth as sacred. These tribes can be called the People of the Condor as they followed the path of the heart, the more feminine path that leads to spiritual advancement. At some point, a group broke off from the People of the Condor. The People of the Eagle followed the path of the intellect, the more masculine path that leads to technological advancement. At that time of the break, it was said that within the past several hundred years, the People of the Eagle would drive the People of the Condor to the brink of extinction. But it was also said that if the Eagle and the Condor flew together in the same skies as equals, as they dance, play, laugh, and mate together, there is the possibility to restore balance to the planet.
In the past six years, I have spent a lot of time thinking about what is “the New Story.” I have come to the conclusion that there is no ONE story. Rather, I see the possibility of a number of meta-narratives that explain where we are, how we got here, and provide positive visions of a future in which every one can locate themselves and their work. Different meta-narratives will work for different people and paths, but for widespread appeal, they need to provide a story that is big enough for everyone to see themselves in.
The Reunion of the Eagle and Condor is such a meta-narrative. It explains how we came to have both technologically advanced as well as spiritually advanced peoples on Earth, how globalization is destroying the lives of rainforest and other indigenous peoples, and how we all can participate in bringing the Earth back to balance.
The prophecy appears to be unfolding at increasing rate as ancient concepts seep into mainstream discourse and healthy lifestyles such as mediation, mindfulness, yoga, shamanism, Pachamama, awakening, chakras, energetics, and grounding. And thankfully, more and more action-oriented efforts are blending ancient wisdom traditions and modern culture. In the 1990s, tribes from South America came together to speak about their tellings of the Eagle and Condor Prophecy, which led to the Peace and Dignity Journeys which reunite indigenous peoples from in the Western Hemisphere every four years:
Peace and Dignity Journeys are spiritual runs that embody the prophecy of the Eagle and Condor. This prophecy mandates that at this time all Indigenous Peoples in the Western Hemisphere shall be reunited in a spiritual way in order to heal our nations so we can begin to work towards a better future for our children and generations to come. Through the Journeys, participant runners and supporters work to accomplish this goal by helping each other reconnect to their respective spiritual practices and traditions; by helping each other relearn our role in the world as Indigenous Peoples; and by reminding each other of our responsibilities to Mother Earth, Father Sky, our communities, and ourselves.
Peace and Dignity Journeys occur every four years and start with Indigenous runners on opposite ends of the continents (Chickaloon, Alaska and Tierra del Fuego, Argentina). They run for six months through hundreds of Indigenous communities where they participate in their respective spiritual practices and traditions; spark dialogue on the issue of peace and dignity for Indigenous Peoples; model their responsibility to Mother Earth, Father Sky, communities, and themselves; and receive the community’s prayers. These prayers and conversations are then carried to proceeding communities until the runners reach the center of the hemisphere. When the runners meet at the Kuna Nation in Panama City, Panama, it will symbolize all Indigenous Peoples joining together in a spiritual way to manifest the prophecy of the Eagle and Condor.
Below are seven examples which give a sense of the ways this prophecy is organically showing up:
- The Shift Network‘s telesummit on Indigenous Wisdom and their many telecourses on wisdom traditions (e.g., practical shamanism, Qi Gong, Active Dreaming) led by indigenous and non-indigenous teachers alike.
- Earth Guardians mobilizing youth leaders around the planet to become the ones we’ve been waiting for – a global collective of youth leadership to defend the planet.
- The Center for Sacred Studies (which initiated and spun off the International Council of the 13 Indigenous Grandmothers) has several Earth-Based Initiatives including the Fountain – which aims to bring sacred sites globally back into the control of indigenous people, as well as ceremonial offerings and educational programs.
- Nickelodeon’s cartoon Avatar: The Last Airbender showcases traditional wisdom.
- Gaia (formerly Gaiam TV) streams yoga, meditation, and mind-expanding programs that provide a true alternative to mainstream media.
- Science and Nonduality provides a forum where preeminent scientists, philosophers, teachers, artists and a large, international community gather to explore and advance the understanding of the interconnectedness of life.
- Children’s books like Pacha’s Pajamas that translate indigenous wisdom into the language of today’s children and meets the kids where they are, which is on screens. The Animated Pacha’s Pajamas book combines the old world technology of softcover books with the new world technology of mobile apps which appear to bring the physical book to life with animations that jump off the page. Through the story, Pacha comes to realize that she is a child of nature, thereby relating herself to both the People of the Eagle and People of the Condor.
There are of course millions of ways that I expect that the Reunion of the Eagle and Condor will continue unfolding at an increasing rate as part and parcel of the planetary awakening that is currently underway.
Anyone can participate in the planetary awakening and become the Reunion of the Eagle and Condor prophecy in action by exploring, learning, and integrating aspects of ancient wisdom traditions into their lives. Join me and millions of others on the path to create a more mindful, resilient, and joyous life and a future that works for all.
